GENUS   Dufourea

Author: Lepeletier, 1841

Type species: Dufourea minuta Lepeletier, 1841, by designation of Richards, 1935: 172.
Synonyms: Halictoides Nylander, 1848; Conohalictoides Viereck, 1904; Neohalictoides Viereck, 1904; Cryptohalictoides Viereck, 1904; Mimulapis Bridwell, 1919; Betheliella Cockerell, 1924.
Clade: Anthophila
Family: Halictidae
Subfamily: Rophitinae
Tribe: Rophitini
Estimated min and max body length from the genus.
Countries with known records of the genus (based on Nieto et al. 2014).
Estimated difficulty to accurately identify a specimen as belonging to this genus.
Distinctive traits
  • Small dark bees, sometimes with metallic colors
  • 2 submarginal cells
  • Short clypeus so that antennae are inserted below the middle of the eyes
  • Rounded scutellum as long as or shorter than the propodeal horizontal area.

Pictures of distinctive traits.
Morphologically close genera and how to distinguish them
  • Dufourea - Rophites & Rophitoides
Dufourea species have no abdominal hairs band, and a propodeal horizontal area longer than the scutellum and posteriorly rounded.
Rophites &Rophitoides species have abdominal hairs bands and a propodeal horizontal area shorter than the scutellum and forming a clear angle with the posterior face of the propodeum.
General comments on Dufourea species identification
Species identification involves criteria of mouthparts, as well as punctation on the thorax and first abdominal tergite, so the mandibles and wings should be opened a bit. Males antennae, median legs and last sternites should also be made visible.
SPECIES IDENTIFICATION TOOL
Sorry, but the species identification tool is not yet available for Dufourea.
Please check the reference(s) below for traditional keys.
